Their biography reaches for "dancer" before it reaches for singer or actor, which is a real distinction and not a grammatical one. Maria Karnilova came out of Ballet Theatre and ended up as Golde. Gwen Verdon's whole entry is nine words and the second one is dancer. The chorus was a trade with its own ladder, and this is who climbed it.
