Around this production
Director Morton Da Costa and choreographer Ron Field were both replaced during troubled tryouts by Joe Layton. The show was based on the classic Kaufman and Hart comedy inspired by Alexander Woollcott.
Kevin Kelly of the Boston Globe was so outraged that even two months later, when a musical called Sherry! opened, he called it “so awful that it makes Holly Golightly look like a nostalgic work of art, and no, I’m not kidding.”
