Saroyan first wrote the story as a screenplay which he was scheduled to direct; when he was fired from the picture, he turned the screenplay into a novel, which came out shortly before the movie was released in 1943.

Here, Homer hasn’t yet won the job. One of his two would-be bosses says, “You’re a little bit young,” making us worry for him. Then another boss notes, “Sometimes we have a telegram requiring you to sing. Can you carry a tune, or do you sing flat?”
