The show famously closed during its Washington D.C. tryout in 1997 and never made it to Broadway, despite being a hit in London's West End. Andrew Lloyd Webber blamed the American production's failure on creative differences with director Harold Prince. Jim Steinman's rock-influenced lyrics included the hit 'No Matter What,' which became a number-one single for Boyzone.
The musical’s first preview performance was on December 6, 1996, at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. After six previews, the musical officially opened on December 12 and permanently closed on February 9, 1997, after seventy regular performances.
