In the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, two stories unfold across two time periods: in 1945, young soldier Billy Cane returns from World War II dreaming of becoming a writer and seeks the help of literary editor Alice Murphy. In the 1920s, a younger Alice's forbidden romance leads to a devastating loss. As the timelines converge, long-buried secrets surface, revealing an unexpected connection between Alice and Billy.

Bright Star is a musical written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. It is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1945–46 with flashbacks to 1923. The musical is inspired by their Grammy-winning collaboration on the 2013 bluegrass album Love Has Come for You and, in turn, the folk tale of the Iron Mountain Baby.
