After becoming artistic director of the New York Shakespeare Festival/ Public Theater in 1993 (until 2004), George C. Wolfe created Bring In ’Da Noise, Bring In ’Da Funk, a musical spectacle that visualized the African-American experience in the United States from slavery to the present. Previously Wolfe had distinguished himself as writer/ director of the play The Colored Museum, the director of the original Broadway production of Angels in America, and the director/ writer of Jelly’s Last Jam. Opening at the Public and then transferring to Broadway, it was a strong rival to Rent as the musical event of 1996. For Bring In ’Da Noise, Bring In ’Da Funk Wolfe harnessed the talents of several emerging composers and lyricists, including Anne Duquesnay, who appeared in the show as da Singer, the chorus/ narrator. Savion Glover made his Broadway debut in The Tap Dance Kid. In Bring in ’Da Noise, at the age of 22, he starred as ’da Beat and Lil ’Dahlin’ as well as being the choreographer.
