At the turn of the century in the Coney Island boarding house district, Lottie Gibson, a warmhearted vaudeville performer past her prime, falls for Dennis Emery, a handsome Shakespearean actor down on his luck. Their budding romance is complicated by Dennis's snobbish ex-wife, who tries to reclaim custody of their young daughter. Lottie must use all her theatrical resourcefulness to win both the man she loves and the girl she hopes to mother.
