In 1963 Louisiana, African-American maid Caroline Thibodeaux works in the basement of the Gellman family, a Jewish household mourning the recent death of the mother. Eight-year-old Noah Gellman leaves his change in his pockets for Caroline, but when his stepmother makes a rule that Caroline can keep any change she finds, it forces both Caroline and Noah to confront uncomfortable truths about race, money, and the winds of change blowing through the civil rights era.
