Based on Daniel Keyes' novel Flowers for Algernon, intellectually disabled Charlie Gordon undergoes an experimental surgery that dramatically increases his intelligence, paralleling an earlier experiment on a mouse named Algernon. As Charlie's genius blossoms, he experiences love and self-awareness for the first time, but when Algernon begins to deteriorate, Charlie realizes his own brilliant mind will also fade.
