On September 11, 2001, when American airspace is closed, 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers are diverted to the tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland. Over five extraordinary days, the bewildered townspeople open their homes, hearts, and barbecue grills to the stranded travelers, forging unexpected friendships across cultures and languages as the world outside reels from the attacks.
