Priam Farll, a celebrated but reclusive English painter, loathes the phoniness of the art world. When his valet dies, Farll seizes the chance to assume the dead man's identity and escape society altogether. Living as a commoner, he falls in love with a charming widow and discovers the simple joys of an ordinary life. But his past threatens to catch up with him when the art world comes looking for the supposedly deceased great painter.
"'A sunlit musical comedy bursting with melody,' said the blurb, 'brim- ming with an artful blend of hilarity and romance": the show's own period marketing line.
