In turn-of-the-century New York, Alice Van Guilder, a bored socialite, rebels against her wealthy family by becoming a jewel thief who operates in disguise as a mysterious cat burglar. When earnest young policeman Bob Purefoy is assigned to catch the notorious thief, Alice decides to help him with his investigation — while continuing her crime spree right under his nose. As Bob and Alice fall in love, neither realizes the other's secret until the truth threatens to destroy their romance.

Drat! The Cat! is a 1965 musical comedy that follows a gilded age police officer's attempts to arrest The Cat, a notorious jewel thief whose civilian alter ego he is deeply in love with. Its Broadway run lasted just eight days. The show features a book and lyrics by Ira Levin with music by Milton Schafer.
Starring Elliott Gould and the delightful Lesley Ann Warren, Drat! The Cat! featured stunning Layton set pieces, including a kabuki burlesque and a choreographed overture showing a jewel thief on a spree, that are still talked about today.
