Next to the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas, Florodora was the most successful early British import staged in New York, even exceeding the original London run of 455 performances. The highlight of the show was the appearance of the dainty, parasol-twirling Florodora Sextette who, with six male partners, introduced the coquettish number, “Tell Me, Pretty Maiden.” In the plotty plot, Florodora is both the name of an island in the Philippines and the locally manufactured perfume.
