The young poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe falls passionately in love with Frederika Brion, the daughter of a country pastor in Alsace. Their romance blossoms amid the pastoral beauty of the countryside, but Goethe's ambition and destiny as a great writer pull him away from the simple life Frederika represents. He must choose between love and his artistic calling, leaving Frederika heartbroken but inspiring some of his greatest poetry.
