Arthur Kipps, an orphan apprenticed to a draper's shop in turn-of-the-century England, unexpectedly inherits a fortune. Before his windfall, he had broken a sixpence with his childhood sweetheart Ann Pornick as a token of love. Now wealthy, Arthur is seduced by the pretentious world of high society and becomes engaged to Helen Walsingham, a woman above his station. After being swindled out of his fortune, Arthur returns to Ann and discovers that happiness lies not in money but in true love.
