Vincent Youmans’ Hit the Deck! was second only to No, No, Nanette as the most popular of the composer’s 12 Broadway musicals. Based on the 1922 play Shore Leave, the show was about a Newport, Rhode Island, coffee-shop owner known as Looloo (Louise Groody, the previous Nanette), who is so totally smitten with sailor Bilge Smith (Charles King) that she follows him all the way to China and even spends her inheritance to salvage a scow for him after his Navy hitch is over. The production, one of the few musicals to play the Belasco Theatre (on 44th Street east of Broadway), introduced audiences to two enduring songs: “Sometimes I’m Happy” and “Hallelujah.” The second of three movie versions, retitled Follow the Fleet, and released in 1936, featured Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and new songs by Irving Berlin.
