Musical, Revolution
Even though conceived as a theatre work, Jesus Christ Superstar appeared as a record before being presented on the stage because composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice were unable to find a producer willing to take a chance on so daring a production. Once it became a Gold Record album, however, the path was smoothed for its Broadway premiere. The self-described “rock opera” retold the last seven days of Christ in such a flamboyant, campy, and mind-blowing fashion that despite a mixed press and the opposition from various religious groups the show became a media hype and a boxoffice hit. The movie version was released in 1973 with Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson.
"ng every bit of text to music, Lloyd Webber also went far beyond the alternation of spoken and sung passages typical of ": the show's own period marketing line.
