British satirist Joyce Grenfell returned to Broadway in Joyce Grenfell: Monologues and Songs, which followed her 1955 revue Joyce Grenfell Requests the Pleasure . . . The new offering reprised “A Thought for Today,” “Three Brothers,” “Songs My Mother Taught Me,” and “Shirley’s Girlfriend” (here “Shirl’s Girl Friend”), and “Nursery School: Free Activity Period” was probably the earlier “Nursery School.” Like the earlier revue, most of the music was composed by Richard Addinsell. Best Plays said Grenfell was “again a gaily chirping mockingbird and impeccably well-bred ape.” Her range was not “large,” her sallies didn’t cut “very deep,” and perhaps “half a loaf of her” was better “than all of one.” But if her art was “thin” it was also “pure” and she was indeed an artist.
