Member of the celebrated British comedy troupe Monty Python’s Flying Circus Eric Idle’s vision of translating their 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail into a Broadway production was realized in this production. Spamalot, under Mike Nichols’s direction, had a cast of comic talents including Hank Azaria, Tim Curry, David Hyde-Pierce, Christopher Seiber, and newcomer Sara Ramirez as “The Lady of The Lake,” cavorting around Medieval England. A limbless, blood-gushing knight, a giant killer rabbit, the knights riding on hobbyhorses with coconuts being thumped for sound effects in full view were among the visual bits. The score included songs from the movie and originals that mocked many popular culture references. A member of the audience had a specific seat involved in the zany proceedings. The show headed to Broadway from a tryout in Chicago with the buzz that it was “the next Producers.” There was a subsequent North American tour and productions in Las Vegas, London, and Australia.
