Twyla Tharp choreographed, directed, and shaped a collection of Billy Joel songs into a “rock ballet.” While the nonsinging dancers danced her significant athletic steps, a rock band played above/ behind them with pianist Matt Cavanaugh doing the vocals of those familiar tunes that Joel orchestrated. Brenda and Eddie, and James and Judy, are teenage couples growing up on Long Island in the 1960s and have to confront the Vietnam war and all the other social changes of the time. The characters were drawn from Joel’s songs while Tharp crafted the thin compelling plot. It ran over three years, toured the US, and had a brief London run. Movin’ Out had continued the projectile of Tharp’s career in modern dance, film, television, and now a Broadway hit. Her 2006 follow up, The Times They Are A-Changin’, based on the songs of Bob Dylan, did not repeat the Joel show’s success. It ran only 28 performances on Broadway. Movin’ Out.
