In 1954, young comedy writer Benjy Stone is assigned to babysit Alan Swann, a fading, hard-drinking movie swashbuckler who is guest-starring on a live television variety show. As the week progresses, Benjy tries to keep the charming but unreliable Swann sober and on schedule while dealing with his own Brooklyn family, a budding romance, and a dangerous union boss who wants to shut down the show. Through it all, Benjy learns that his flawed hero is more human than the characters he played on screen.
