In 1812 Moscow, the young and impressionable Natasha Rostova, engaged to the absent Andrey, is seduced by the dashing but dissolute Anatole Kuragin during a night at the opera. As Natasha's reputation is ruined and her engagement threatened, the world-weary Pierre Bezukhov finds unexpected purpose in helping her, discovering meaning in human connection on the eve of Napoleon's invasion.
