Musical, Golden Age
The work proved to be highly innovative in a number of ways: it placed the orchestra backstage, it put musicians onstage to accompany singers, it had the principals and chorus move scenery and props in full view of the audience, and — conforming to the show’s title — it removed the string section from the orchestra. In addition, it was concerned with an interracial love affair, though the matter of race was never discussed.
