The revue Smile at Me was a quick flop that lasted little more than three weeks, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. In his opening night review, Brooks Atkinson in the New York Times noted that the show had been “on the verge of production for the last ten days,” had never been “quite certain of opening,” and lacked the courage “to fold its tent and steal away quietly.” After the opening and the desultory reviews, the creative team drastically rearranged the order of the songs and sketches, dropped six numbers, and added two. But nothing helped.
