Three fast flops followed. High Society (4/27/98; 144 performances) was an inept theatricalization of the Cole Porter film. The Civil War (4/22/99; 61 performances) was Frank Wildhorn’s decidedly ersatz take on what could have been a moving reflection on an especially tragic period of American history. Instead, it was neither a real musical nor a concert. Swing! (12/9/99; 461 performances) might have fit more comfortably on a cruise ship, but it did boast the talents of Anne Hampton Callaway and Laura Benati.
