Gideon Fletcher returns to his hometown of Wallsend, a shipbuilding community in northern England, after years away. He finds the shipyard threatened with closure and must confront the life he left behind — including the woman he abandoned and their teenage son. When the workers decide to build one last ship as an act of defiance, Gideon must choose between running again or joining the community he once rejected.
