Wicked is loosely based on novelist Gregory MaGuire’s inventive exploration of The Wizard of Oz, which is told from the perspective of the witches. Stephen Schwartz was so enthusiastic after reading it he sought and obtained the theatrical rights and adapted it in collaboration with book writer Winnie Holtzman. The Shiz University, presided over by headmistress Madame Morrible, is where student witches the noble green Elphaba (Idina Menzel), “The Wicked Witch of the East,” and the ambitious Glinda (Kristin Chenoweth), “The Good Witch of the North,” meet and eventually clash. The origins of Toto, the munchkins, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the Wizard are all explained.
